Transgender Boxers Stir Controversy at Olympics
Admission Rules Handled by IOC
PARIS - The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has come under fire after admitting two female boxers to the Olympic boxing competitions. The boxers, Imane Khelif of Algeria and WEB Lin of China, have been at the center of a controversy over gender eligibility.
Lin Stripped of Medal Over Gender Test
Lin, a two-time world champion, was stripped of a bronze medal at last year's world championships after failing a gender verification test. The IOC's decision to allow her to compete in the Olympics has been met with criticism from some who believe she does not meet the eligibility requirements.
Khelif Wins Opening Bout
Khelif, on the other hand, won her opening Olympic boxing bout when opponent Angela Carini of Italy quit after just 46 seconds. The IOC defended its decision to allow Khelif to compete, saying that she meets all of the eligibility requirements and that any questions about her gender are "inappropriate."
