Swim Warning Issued After Gator Found Swimming Along Beach Shorelines Off Tybee Island

Officials urge caution after 6-foot alligator spotted near popular swimming areas

Savannah, GA – A swim warning has been issued for Tybee Island after a 6-foot alligator was spotted swimming along the beach shorelines on Wednesday morning. Officials are urging beachgoers to use caution and be aware of their surroundings while in the water.

What to Do If You See an Alligator

  • Stay calm and do not approach the alligator.
  • Back away slowly and leave the area.
  • Report the sighting to a lifeguard or park ranger.

Alligators are common in the area, but it is rare for them to be seen swimming so close to the beach. Officials believe that the alligator may have been swept out to sea by recent storms and is now disoriented.

The swim warning will remain in effect until the alligator is captured or leaves the area. Beachgoers are advised to stay out of the water and be aware of their surroundings while on the beach.
